With economy on brink, Treasury Secretary sought help from God

With economic catastrophe looming in 2008, then-Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson sought help from a source even greater than Alan Greenspan, according to Paulson’s upcoming book.

You can read about it here and here.

Paulson, it turns out, has a supportive, scripture-quoting spouse who knows, instinctively, what Bible verse he needs to hear to bolster his spirits. She recites it to him and he gets a second wind. Panic subsides. Confidence returns.

Paulson’s testimony sounds like a lot of other evangelical testimonies I’ve heard. Except they weren’t trying to deactivate a Great Depression Timebomb. Plus, Paulson isn’t an evangelical. He’s a Christian Scientist. Sounds like an interesting book about a scary moment in U.S. history.

    “IN GOD WE TRUST”

All others must pay cash . . .

Paulson cites 2 Tim 1:7 from the KJV:
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear,
but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

Here is the same passage from the NRSV:
“for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice,
but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.”

That’s a nice story. I like the idea that public servants in high positions will be guided to act confidently but tempered by compassion and sensibility.
