David, for once, I’m not going to take the bait on that one . . .
But as to Lynchburg, it’s interesting that, at least in the eyes of the Washington Post, Jerry Falwell totally ruined Lynchburg, a town formerly known for its tolerance. My former father in law, a Disciples of Christ minister, graduated from Lynchburg College, the old line Disciples of Christ college there, which was a leader in civil rights, as were many Disciples colleges, including Transylvania, in Lexington. Falwell’s school, of course, was built and founded as a “segregation academy,” a school for whites who did not want their children to attend integrated schools.
As usual, a hundred years of progress driven by liberal Christianity is tainted by thirty years of conservative christian segregationists.
