In the annals of bad taste, this has got to be a first. Tennis player Ashley Harkleroad is showing off her Jesus fish tattoo (and a whole lot more) in the August issue of Playboy magazine.
Brad Greenberg, author of The God Blog, has all the gory details…

The whole issue of tattoos and religion is interesting. There is some suggestion in the literature that early Christians wore tattoos, that as some observors wrote, they imprinted the symbol of Jesus on their bodies. Jewish law, of course, forbids tattoos, to the point that people with tattoos have been rejected for burial in Jewish cemetaries.

And yet, half the tattoos you see, in real life or in pictures, have religious themes. I’ve never seen the Jesus fish as a tattoo, or its alter ego, the Darwin fish with legs (which I think is hilarious). There are crosses of every description, and all those Catholic symbols with hearts and flames and stuff that in my Protestant ignorance I’ve never quite understood. The eastern religions weigh in, too, with all manner of Chinese characters and even Sanskrit. So, if this chick is in bad taste, she’s not alone.

And I thought Hebrew tattoos made me angry.

True, IAm (are you related to the pet food people?), but to me, the bigger story here is that this woman’s mother was a tennis instructor at Freed-Hardemann University, in Henderson, TN, one of the most conservative fundamentalist colleges in the country. As their Wikipedia article says, “Full-time students are required to take at least one Bible class every semester and attend a daily chapel service.” What’s the daughter of a Freed-Hardemann grad doing with tattoos and posing for Playboy in the first place?

The bottom line is our children are not learning common sense from us. Nudity has become acceptable as a career enhancing move, not to mention the money involved. The moral issue of this isn’t even contemplated. This is the world of today. I wonder how her future spouse will take this and I also wonder if she will regret it.

  5. Asinus Gravis Says:

When the young lady decides to pursue a career as an evangelical preacher, this background material will help as an immense drawing card.

She can vividly recount her “wallowing in sin,” spelled out in detail, in her sermons to the titilation of her hearers.

This is career enhancement on steroids!

  6. Caleb Powers Says:

Asinus, if she needs any help getting started, there’s a new how-to book on the subject:

“HOW TO GET RICH AS A TELEVANGELIST OR FAITH HEALER
    by Bill Wilson

Learn how to make a fortune as a religious con artist. This lucrative career has sustained countless scoundrels, frauds and hucksters for millennia. If you play the part right, you will be blessed with riches, power, prestige and sex . . . ”

    It’s at:

Apparently the book is an expose of how these guys (and gals) work.
