   The thing that lawyers and abortions have in common is that everyone hates them in theory, but many resort to them in times of crisis.

   I am sorry about this…I don’t think should be a public matter, but people love to see well known folks brought down…Just as sin-sick as the sin comitted by this man, and the woman involved…

   Well, Fr. Van, you’ve got to take the good with the bad. If you say this shouldn’t be a public matter, then should his squiring around a priest at every basketball game, theoretically as chaplain for the team (when you know only a tiny minority, if any, of the players are Catholic) be a public matter? I mean, what is the purpose of that, other than to try and strut around and claim to be more Catholic than thou?

   This is a man whose entire career has been public, and not by accident, but by choice.

   Seems like I read somewhere that when you live by the sword, you die by the sword.

   And, since it’s Friday and to lighten this up a bit, I loved Joel Pett’s cartoon in today’s Lexington paper, which shows a Catholic priest hearing confessions, and Pitino’s face at the window, with the priest saying, “Well, my son, at least you didn’t use a condom . . . ”

   Fr. Van, I guess I think hypocrisy always ought to be held up publicly for what it is.

   Well, an indiscretion of six years ago doesn’t mean he hasn’t grown in his relationship with God. I think that often we define folks and don’t allow them to grow out of the box we put them in…Because he sinned doesn’t necessarily make him a hypocrite, only human…Publicity doesn’t just hurt him, but does ancillary damage to his family…

   Fr. Van, I’m not anti-Pitino, but I am anti-hypocrite. This affair is six years old, but we’re only finding out about it now. Bro. Rick may well have grown in his walk with God during those six years; apparently, the only way to go would be up. But if he has, his press conference, if that’s what it was, didn’t show it; if anything, it made him sound even more arrogant than he was before. His quote that doing something bad “is part of your past if you tell the truth, but part of your future if you lie,” makes it sound like that he thinks everything in life comes out of one of his self help books. You and I both know that the only reason Louisville didn’t fire him is because he had a winning record. Ditto Michael Vick; if anyone less talented had been convicted of running a dog fighting ring of all things, his career would be over.

   My point is that if you live a public life, you get the benefit of that and your family gets the benefit of that, too, and it’s a bit disingenuous to suggest that this should be seen as a private matter, particularly when Bro. Rick has been so careful to groom his public Catholicism by having a Catholic priest around him all the time. I feel sorry for his family, but then I felt sorry for them before, too. I can’t imagine what it would be like to grow up in the same household with that level of ego and hypocrisy.

   And, while I have no inside information, looking at the tea leaves suggests that more is to come, particularly if Bro. Rick has to testify at Ms. Sypher’s trial. My money says he withdraws the charges and it never goes to trial. Pitino is not, I expect, the kind of guy who’d do well handling a cross examination.

   Does anyone know if he has gone through formal reconciliation and/or if he is being refused communion in the Roman Catholic church? It would be the height of hyprocisy if politicians get kicked to the sacramental curb for merely believing that abortion should remain legal, if he is in communion with the church after an extramarital affair that results in a pregnancy, putting this woman in a position where an abortion is the best option for her and only disclosing this information when it is becoming public all the while pumping up his image of Roman Catholic dad and father. I should add that I HOPE he has gone through this important rite, made amends (as ineffective as that may be at this point)to his wife and the woman in question, etc., but that wouldn’t put him in a favorable position legally (because of course the content of a confession is entirely confidential but the amends part would not be his lawyers would surely permit.
