Jesus Was an Episcopalian — and You Can Be One Too!

I’m guessing they didn’t have these at this year’s Southern Baptist Convention: buttons saying “Jesus Was An Episcopalian — And You Can Be One Too!”

In fact, there’s a whole line of “Jesus Was An Episcopalian” merchandise being promoted in the exhibition hall at the church’s General Convention in Anaheim, Calif.

There’s a 15-session “Jesus Was An Episcopalian” book and study guide — on sale for $20. Or you can order “Jesus Was An Episcopalian” t-shirts, mugs, stickers and other items at CafePress.com

The book has received great reviews from Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu and Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, by the way.

I’ll keep an eye out for other unusual merchandise while I’m here — perhaps a “My Boss Was a Jewish Carpenter” coffee mug or a “God Was My Copilot” bumper sticker.

One of my housemates at the commune put a “Jesus Is A Liberal” bumper sticker on my desk. Does this mean I have to replace it with a “Jesus Was an Episcopalian” sticker? Can I still keep my postcard of Che Guevara posted on the fridge? Do I have to get rid of my Gatewood buttons? Enquiring minds want to know . . .

But I thought Jesus made wine, not sherry…

Yes, Niall, but he made it from water and didn’t leave the recipe!

Luckily, it appears that at least some of the readers of this blog are taking this tongue-in-cheek, which was CLEARLY (and hopefully) the intent. It’s pretty clever, actually. . . .

If the Baptists came up with these buttons, I’m guessing they’d say “Jesus IS a Baptist.”

  6. Caleb Powers Says:

I expect you’re right, Frank. Certainly my bumper sticker says that Jesus IS a liberal.

  7. Fr. Van Windsor Says:

I think it is a poor choice of words… I expect those who have left the Episcopal Church will be able to say…”Jesus WAS an Episcopalian, so were we, He went with us…” But living in Arkansas, and having had an Arkansan President, we can always answer, “What does ‘is’ mean?

  8. David Duke Says:

No Frank, John is the Baptist!

  9. John Sparks Says:

And here all this time, I listened to Kris Kristofferson and thought Jesus was a Capricorn.

How about ” Imitate Jesus, it will do the world some good.”
