In Haiti, no help has arrived in this village

This e-mail was forwarded to me by the El Dorado, Ark.-based Haiti Education Foundation. It comes from a journalist in a village known as Leogane in the hills beyond Port-au-Prince.

Dear ONES
Thank you for sharing your simpathy with us. This is really terrible in Haiti. We have no words or expressions to describe that. Hopefully there are some survivors. In Leogane no help is coming yet. People are constantly dying. Some yell from the debris and can’t be gotten out. We can’t walk through the streets in Leogane, because the dead are stinking and can’t be gotten out of the debris. Almost all the houses are destroyed in Leogane too, and we have no assistance so far. Anything you do to help or share this email to others that can help will be nice.
Best regards

Our update today is full of good news regarding more of our friends in Haiti. Some of you will recognize the names of these men who have close ties to the Haiti Education Foundation. Contact has been made with Jackson – a longtime driver and friend to many missioners. He is well and with his family in Lascaobas, outside of Port au Prince. Chris McRae has heard from Dujour – a young man who is on the OCDES Board. The OCDES Board works alongside HEF on the Haiti side. Dujour is a Haitian journalist, and has wonderful English. He is well and working with relief workers as an interpreter. At the close of this update, I will share his email to all of us and some photos he took in Leogane. Dujour has also reported to us that Harry Theodore, a man who was responsible for school construction projects for many years, is ok and is working to find clean water for residents in Leogane. Harry attended the Living Waters U training camp in Tennessee to install water treatment systems.

This is the email from Dujour:

We have no schools in Leogane at this time, but this is where Frances and Gardner began their work…at the Hospital St. Croix, which is located there. We drive through Leogane each time we go into the mountains and often stop for gas or water. Knowing that no help has arrived there further confirms that there is no help for our people in the mountains.

Please continue to pray and we will further update everyone as more information comes in.

Blessings,

Susan Turbeville

  1. John Says:

Canadian sailors from HMCS Athabaskan reach devastated Haitian town of Leogane
    on Tuesday.

Maybe the reason they came by sea is a giant crack splits the main highway into town in two, leaving a ditch with depths of up to 30 feet.

Also, the Marine helicopters began landing just before noon on Tuesday.

The following tells why things are moving at the pace they are.

International aid workers and supplies have poured into Haiti in the last few days, but the country’s ruptured communications, poor roads, and chaos in the rubble-strewn capital have made it difficult to get help and information to the people, especially out in rural areas.

  2. Alice C. Linsley Says:

    Lord, have mercy.
