Episcopal Church urged to translate its website into Spanish

flockwood

It’s been nearly a month since the Episcopal Church removed the transparent governance pledge from its home page in order (church officials said) to “make room” on the site for a Spanish (and French!) translation.

But so far, the text is still English Only. Fortunately, the bishop for the Convocation of American Churches in Europe is working to fix that.

The Rt. Rev. Pierre Welte Whalon has introduced Resolution B017 which allocates $250,000 to translate the Episcopal Church Web site into Spanish and French.

How many $600 ashtrays does that come with?

I realize that we’re in the global era, when we have “Anglican” churches in non-English speaking countries all over the world, but I have to stop and wonder a bit as to why people who speak languages other than English would be interested in us. After all, the whole purpose of the “Anglican” communion was to provide a generic church for English speaking people. We have fleshed out that generic church into a general, liberal, generic protestant church that apparently has enough juice in it to attract non-English speakers. So much of Anglican worship and traditions, though, are wrapped up in our particular forms of worship — in English — that I wonder whether anything like the spirit of what we have would translate well in other languages.

That’s not to suggest I’m against the translation, but I do wonder who will read it.

I’ll do the job for only $200,000. It’ll save the church 50 grand.

It would take about 60 seconds per page to insert a link to Google Translator.

Something tells me that a native speaker of Spanish would hardly be satisfied with the result of Google Translator; I know when I translate something into English with it, you’ve then got to go back and translate Google English into some semblance of the Queen’s English.
