Democrats dump preacher from interfaith service

The Rev. Fidel “Butch” Montoya isn’t happy about being disinvited. The Rocky Mountain News quotes Democratic officials as saying they failed to properly vet Montoya before issuing him an invitation.

One person who will be appearing is North Little Rock native Charles Blake, the presiding bishop of the Church of God in Christ and one of the best preachers I’ve ever heard. Rev. Blake is pastor of West Angeles Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles.

Is it possible to agree with both parties? What happened to Rev. Montoya was an insult and a real shame. But what if the DNC kept him in the panel? Time and again, the opposition has shown its willingness to take any minor perception of wrongdoing– real or imagined– and explode it into a controversy. You can blame the Dems for being careless in the first place, but not for being overly cautious in this hyperpartisan environment.

I’ve never heard of Montoya, but it seems to me that a guy named Fidel who goes by Butch would have wide support among both left- and right-wingers.

And, I wonder why they picked two pentecostals. I assume they’re going for the Latino vote with Butch and the black vote with Blake, but I would imagine that only a small minority of either blacks or Latinos are actually pentecostal, and I’ve never thought there was much of a pentecostal block among democrats generally. But, on the other hand, they can probably preach, which is more than you can say for most mainstream pastors.
