Baptist Press: “Elaborate hoax” targets Southern Baptists

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–An elaborate hoax Tuesday claimed that the Southern Baptist Convention was on the verge of formally supporting “gay marriage” and repenting of its stance on homosexuality, and the hoax backed up the false claim with a press release, phone number and website.

The stunt was pulled off by a group calling itself the Center for Responsible Christian Living, but the group didn’t identity itself until later in the day and only after one major Catholic blog had posted the release as legitimate.

    “One major Catholic blog”???

The story is so absurd, one wonders who would fall for it.

  2. Daniel Says:

It’s sad that it was a hoax. Sadder still that anyone with a brain would KNOW it was a hoax from the git-go because we all, sadly, simply assume ALL Southern Baptists to be judgmental, homophobic and prejudiced. How sad indeed. I know many good Baptists who struggle mightily with such modern questions. I’m their token homosexual Christian friend..LOL..and though I’m personally opposed to gay marriage for me, I’m certainly unopposed to it for others, as I’m unopposed to all the divorced heterosexual Baptists around me.

  3. Caleb Powers Says:

Yes, Justin, but wouldn’t it be great if it were true?

  4. Linton Says:

Fake press releases are the very definition of responsible Christian living.

  5. Ali Reza Says:

Its shameful. The real christians should complain against these events.

  6. John Hamilton Says:

Center for Responsible Christian Living? Doesn’t sound very responsible to me.
