Baptist Press: “Elaborate hoax” targets Southern Baptists

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–An elaborate hoax Tuesday claimed that the Southern Baptist Convention was on the verge of formally supporting “gay marriage” and repenting of its stance on homosexuality, and the hoax backed up the false claim with a press release, phone number and website.

The stunt was pulled off by a group calling itself the Center for Responsible Christian Living, but the group didn’t identity itself until later in the day and only after one major Catholic blog had posted the release as legitimate.

Fake group targets media, Southern Baptists

This press release was in my in-box this morning. It is being sent to newspaper reporters across the country. It claims to be a statement from the Southern Baptist Convention’s executive committee REVERSING the church’s long-standing position on Christian marriage. IT IS CLEARLY A HOAX. Somebody clearly did quite a bit of work trying to pull the wool over people’s eyes. They also created a fake website,
