Survey: No evangelical breakthrough for Obama

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Crosswalk.com, a popular evangelical website, polled 777 of its site users about the upcoming presidential election. Here’s what they found:

McCain 81%
Not sure 10%
Obama 5%
Other 3%
Not voting 1%

On a related note, 32-year-old Relevant Magazine publisher Cameron Strang had been scheduled to give an invocation at the Democratic National Convention on Monday night. But Strang backed out as the convention neared, saying he didn’t want to appear to be endorsing Obama. (more…)

Democrats dump preacher from interfaith service

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

The Rev. Fidel “Butch” Montoya isn’t happy about being disinvited. The Rocky Mountain News quotes Democratic officials as saying they failed to properly vet Montoya before issuing him an invitation.

One person who will be appearing is North Little Rock native Charles Blake, the presiding bishop of the Church of God in Christ and one of the best preachers I’ve ever heard. Rev. Blake is pastor of West Angeles Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles.

Warren doubts Obama will sway many evangelicals

Monday, August 18th, 2008

The God-o-Meter has a very interesting interview with Saddleback Church pastor Rick Warren. It sounds like Warren wasn’t impressed with Barack Obama’s answer regarding when human life begins. ["That's above my pay grade," Brother Obama reportedly said. Brother McCain said human life begins at conception.]

Two evangelicals to pray at Democratic National Convention

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

The Obama campaign has come up with a prayer line up that looks, demographically, a lot like America. (List is below.) One of them is evangelical Joel Hunter, a megachurch pastor who has rejected the Christian Right’s agenda — focusing on abortion and gay marriage above all other issues.

The other evangelical, interestingly, is Cameron Strang, publisher of Relevant magazine and the son of Charisma Magazine founder (and Huckabee backer) Stephen Strang. I met the younger Strang at the Religion Newswriters Association convention in 2005, and he’s a bright, personable, impressive young man. [I'm not positive about his age, but I'd guess he's in his late 20s.] Strang’s magazine, Relevant, is one of the most enjoyable religious magazines on the market today. (more…)

Rick Warren avoids the ‘J’ word while speaking to rabbis

Friday, August 15th, 2008

The God Blog has a fascinating post about evangelist Rick Warren’s purpose-driven speech to a group of leading rabbis. Apparently, Warren spoke at length but never mentioned the ‘J’ word (as in ‘Jesus’) a single time. Observers in the evangelical and fundamentalist communities are split over whether Warren’s omission was tactful or timid.

Pope bars reading of English Bible from Catholic masses?

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Religion News Service moved a startling story this week. It begins: “Catholics at worship should neither sing nor pronounce the name of God as “Yahweh,” the Vatican has said, citing the authority of both Jewish and Christian practice.
The instruction came in a June 29 letter to Catholic bishops conferences around the world from the Vatican’s top liturgical body, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments, by an explicit ‘directive’ of Pope Benedict XVI.
‘In recent years the practice has crept in of pronouncing the God of Israel’s proper name,’ the letter noted, referring to the four-consonant Hebrew ‘Tetragrammaton,’ YHWH.”
If this story by Francis X. Rocca is correct (and it certainly appears to be), it means American Catholics will no longer be able to quote some passages from the New American Bible — or from the Vatican website — during church.
