Oral Roberts University braces for student exodus

TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ As Oral Roberts University prepares to hand out diplomas to its Class of 2008, Anna Siebring, a junior, will be mailing out applications to transfer to another school.

Siebring, a government major, is among many students having second thoughts about staying at Oral Roberts after six months of scandal at the evangelical Christian university.

Americans agree: Wright spells trouble for Obama

According to a Rasmussen Reports survey, only 4 percent of Americans believe Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s comments have helped the Obama campaign. Sixty-six percent say his comments have hurt the Democratic frontrunner.

Professor loses job at Wheaton after seeking divorce

Divorce is no longer a career-ending decision in mainline Protestantism. And certainly, some evangelical and Pentecostal leaders get divorced without it derailing their ministries. But a few conservative Protestant institutions continue to uphold New Testament teachings on divorce and ministry.

Claim: Overseas Methodists blocked pro-gay measure

At the General Conference of the United Methodist Church this week, delegates voted to uphold the church’s teaching that homosexual conduct is “not compatible” with Christian teaching. Supporters of traditional church teachings on sexuality prevailed 501-417. The vote (54.6 percent to 45.4 percent) was far closer than in 2000 and 2004, suggesting that gay rights activists could win in 2012.

Messianic Jewish teen sparks uproar in Israel

Some of Israel’s top rabbis are calling for a boycott of the International Bible Quiz because one of the finalists, Bat-El Levi, is a “Messianic Jew.” I’d never heard of the International Bible Quiz before, but it’s apparently a big deal — traditionally shown live on national television on Israel’s Independence Day.

Conservatives may seek church trial for Presiding bishop

According to the Living Church News Service, a lawyer has prepared a 7,000-word memorandum discussing the possibility of trying to bring charges against Katharine Jefferts Schori, the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. The allegations would be that she is violating the constitution and canons of the 2.2 million member U.S. denomination. The document is apparently circulating among conservative bishops and others. Since they’re outnumbered, it’s unclear how they could win such a battle with their own primate.
